Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is an important therapeutic agent used not only for common acne but also for skin discolorations, especially melasma and acne rosacea, which are common disorders in aging women.

By inhibiting the activity of neutrophils, it inhibits the production of free radicals and serves as their binder. Thus, it has anti-aging properties.Azelaic acid has a bacteriostatic effect on Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria by blocking oxidoreductive mitochondrial enzymes and inhibiting the synthesis of DNA and bacterial cell proteins.By inhibiting 5α-reductase - the enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of testosterone becoming its active form - dihydrotestosterone - reduces lipogenesis, thus it has comedolytic properties.

It is used in dermatology and aesthetic medicine, various acnes, in the treatment of discolorations, as well as in anti-wrinkle procedures. It stimulates dermal fibroblasts to produce more collagen, elastin and GAG in the papillary dermis and also stimulates sebum production in aging women.
