Clinical Skincare

By Lisette Hilton, Contributing Editor, The Aesthetic Guide

Azelaic acid has long been called a workhorse among dermatologic actives. The Aesthetic Guide's feature looks at why it is still underused in everyday skincare, and how Hyaestic's azelaic acid range was formulated to address that.

At a glance

  • Azelaic acid is versatile, but hard to formulate comfortably
  • Performance depends strongly on the delivery vehicle
  • Hyaestic 0.5% BHA & 10% Aze Cream and Hyaestic 20% Aze Cream
  • New gel serums: 15 AZ Skin Clearcode Serum and 20 AZ Skin Stabilizer Serum, made for highly sensitive skin

A proven active with a formulation problem

The feature points to studies linking azelaic acid's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to meaningful improvements in concerns such as rosacea, acne, melasma and other dyschromias, with only mild, transient local irritation. It also cites a review in the Journal of Dermatologic Treatment that describes azelaic acid, alone or in combination, as a well-tolerated option across a range of dermatologic conditions.

Yet it remains underused in everyday skincare. One likely reason, according to the article, is its limited solubility: it is difficult to turn into a smooth, lightweight and comfortable topical product. Researchers have found that its performance depends strongly on the vehicle it is delivered in.

The encouraging news: advanced delivery systems can enable dose-sparing strategies and improve adherence to skincare that contains azelaic acid.

Two creams built around the challenge

The article describes how Hyaestic, a clinical-grade skincare company based in Orange, California, approached the formulation challenge with two popular creams.

Hyaestic 0.5% BHA & 10% Aze Cream

A corrective treatment cream that works to improve the appearance of blemishes, uneven tone, post-acne marks, rough texture and visible congestion. According to the company, it is particularly suited to skin with several overlapping concerns: acne, excess sebum, clogged pores, inflammation, discoloration and uneven surface texture.

Hyaestic 20% Aze Cream

A high-strength corrective cream formulated with 20% azelaic acid, made to help manage acne-prone skin, excess sebum, redness, uneven tone, post-inflammatory discoloration, rough texture, hyperkeratosis, photoaging and melasma-prone pigmentation. The 20% concentration is described as intensive support for skin affected by persistent congestion, visible redness, irregular pigmentation and textural imbalance.

The company reports that in the nearly five years since launch, both formulas have received positive feedback for their texture and ease of use.

New gel formulas for highly sensitive skin

Hyaestic recently announced that it will expand the range with two gel formulas featuring an azelaic acid derivative, developed as gentler options for highly sensitive skin:

  • 15 AZ Skin Clearcode Serum with a 15% azelaic acid derivative
  • 20 AZ Skin Stabilizer Serum with a 20% azelaic acid derivative

The article adds that studies have shown azelaic acid topicals at these concentrations can be effective across skin concerns ranging from acne to melasma. In a statement released with the new products, Hyaestic says the expansion reflects its identity as a physician-led, inclusive skincare brand that recognizes differences in skin tolerance and offers more than one formulation pathway.
